Explore a 36-Kilometer Loop Through the Heart of Authentic Tuscany

Immerse yourself in a captivating 36-kilometer loop that winds along scenic dirt roads and ancient landmarks, offering a deep dive into the nature, history, and soul of Tuscany. Starting directly from our Villa, this route takes you through thousand-year-old churches, medieval fortresses, monasteries, and tranquil lakes — all nestled within a breathtaking landscape.

A Journey Through Villages, Parishes, and Historic Villas

The trail begins just 500 meters from the villa at the Church of San Bartolomeo in Pignano, located within the medieval Borgo di Pignano, whose defensive walls date back to the year 1000. As you continue, you’ll pass through Borgo di Grignano, a historic farming hamlet where, on a clear day, you can even glimpse the island of Corsica in the distance.

After about 7 km, the landscape opens up to reveal Monte Voltraio (also known as Poggio alla Rocca), home to the ruins of a 10th-century fortress. Along the way, you’ll also encounter the small 12th-century Church of San Lorenzo (now a ruin) and the grand Villa Palagione, adjacent to the 13th-century Church of San Giovanni.

From here, a scenic path leads to the summit of Monte Voltraio, where the remains of the medieval stronghold overlook the valley. Continuing onward, you’ll arrive at Lake Palagione, a tranquil natural basin formed in the 1950s after a hill subsidence — an ideal spot for a peaceful break in nature.

Through Nature Reserves and Crystal-Clear Lakes

The journey continues through the Montenero Nature Reserve, a pristine protected area that leads you to the Montenero Ponds, perfect for a refreshing dip until early July, when the water begins to recede. Reaching the ponds involves a short 15- to 20-minute walk, but the scenery is absolutely worth it.

Back on the trail, you’ll pass the 18th-century Villa di Scopicci, followed by the majestic Villa di Ulignano, and finally reach the small rural church known as “La Nera”, accessible with a short walk.

If you choose to explore the itinerary on horseback or by bike, a dedicated path through the Woods of Poggio del Fanciullo will bring you back to the Church of San Lorenzo, before returning to the villa via a picturesque stretch of open countryside.
